Types of Frame Material

Most people who choose eyeglass frames are concerned with price and style. But there are other factors to consider, such as how lightweight, strong, flexible and corrosion-resistant the frames are.

Today's eyeglass frames are made from many types of plastic and metal. Some frames combine materials—for example, a frame with plastic surrounding the lenses and temple pieces made from titanium. Different materials will be right for different people and situations. In this quick guide, we will review some of the most common materials used for all types of eyeglasses that you can find.

Metal Eyeglass Frame

In general, frames made from metal, titanium or alloys (a mixture of metals) stand up well to wear and tear.

  • METAL frames generically, are a blend of different metals, typically with nickel alloys. We use the generic term 'Metal' for metal frames other than stainless steel or titanium. Metal frames are fairly corrosion resistant and durable especially with spring hinges as well as adjustable.

  • Titanium and beta-titanium are popular materials for eyeglass frames. frames are very strong, lightweight, durable, strong and corrosion-resistant. They are hypoallergenic – an important consideration for people who are allergic to certain metals, such as nickel.

  • Stainless steel frames are lightweight and strong, but not as light as titanium. They can be less expensive than other metal frames and are corrosion-resistant.

  • Aluminum frames are used in high-end eyewear designers because of the unique look it creates. It is corrosion-resistant, flexible and strong.

  • Cellulose acetate propionate is a lightweight, nylon-based plastic that is hypoallergenic. It can be a little softer than other plastic frames.

  • Optyl is a brand of epoxy resin. When heated, it becomes very malleable, making it easy for the optician to mold the frame to the shape of your face.

  • TR90 is a thermoplastic material that is incredibly durable, flexible, and lightweight. Frames made with TR90 are extremely comfortable. Since they are flexible, they can bend under pressure and contour your customer's face comfortably.

  • Ultem (polyetherimide) is a semi-transparent high strength plastic material that can operate in high service temperature environments. Ultem frames are extremely flexible and extremely light weight. Most Ultem frames are as light or lighter than titanium metal. Ultem frames can have a thinner look than acetate and many can be had with nose pads.
